5 signs your crane hydraulics need attention

Hydraulic systems do most of the heavy lifting — literally — on a crane, and problems here can quickly turn into expensive downtime if they're not caught early. Here are five signs it's time to inspect your hydraulic system.

1. Slower or jerky lifting motion. A noticeable drop in smoothness or speed often points to a failing pump or worn valve.

2. Visible fluid leaks around hoses, fittings or the pump housing. Even small leaks reduce system pressure over time and point to seals or fittings that need replacing.

3. Unusual noise from the pump. Whining, knocking or grinding sounds can indicate air in the system, low fluid, or internal wear.

4. Overheating hydraulic fluid. If the system is running hotter than usual, it may be working harder than it should due to a partial blockage or failing component.

5. Inconsistent or drifting boom position. If the boom doesn't hold its position under load, it's often a sign of internal leakage past worn seals.
