Crane drive lines carry enormous loads at low speed, and the axles do triple duty: driving, steering and braking through a single assembly with planetary hub reduction and oil-immersed brakes.

Ratio matching is critical on multi-axle machines. Fitting an axle with a different final drive ratio to the others produces drive line wind-up that will destroy the new axle as well as the ones already fitted — so always confirm the ratio from the axle plate, not from the parts book alone.
For machines that have worked in sand and dust, seals and breathers deserve particular attention: axle housings that draw in contamination through a blocked breather fail far earlier than the service interval suggests.
